“Freaks”: Why Netflix ‘first superhero film from Germany is actually not one at all
There has been a new German Netflix film on the streaming platform since September 2, 2020. Despite its supernatural powers and costumes, it is not a real superhero film, according to actors Tim Oliver Schultz and Cornelia Gröschel.
“Freaks – You are one of us” could well be described as the first German Netflix superhero film. That’s exactly what we at did when the streaming giant released the first trailer for the new film by director Felix Binder (“Club of the Red Ribbons”). After all, it is about a loving mother (Cornelia Gröschel) who one day notices that she has supernatural abilities – and soon afterwards learns that she is not alone with it.
The invulnerable Marek (Wotan Wilke Möhring) and the self-proclaimed Electro Man Elmar (Tim Oliver Schultz) make the potential superhero team perfect. And even if the latter, including the chic leather suit, does everything to become the savior of the world, “Freaks” is in the end not a classic superhero film …
Not a big hero spectacle à la Marvel
It is obvious that “Freaks” does not play on the same scale as the Hollywood machineries of Marvel, DC and Co. This would not be feasible at all for budget reasons. But with “freaks” you don’t even try to hit the same line. “It’s also advertised as an independent sci-fi drama,” Tim Oliver Schultz pointed out in an online interview in August …
“It’s also advertised as an independent sci-fi drama”
… and is absolutely right about it. Because the “Red Ribbon Club” star knows exactly what the real focus of his new film is: “It’s mainly about underdogs, people who don’t really feel at home in society, who develop supernatural abilities and deal with them somehow have to.”

A coming-of-age film – with superpowers
To dismiss the film simply as a simple superhero film would not do it justice, thinks leading actress Cornelia Gröschel (“Tatort”). For them, “Freaks” is something very special not least because there is something for everyone.
In an interview, the Dresden woman revealed: “He [“ Freaks ”] has a sense of humor, it’s a bit of a romance film, it has a bit of drama, and it has a bit of action. There’s something for everyone. The film tells the story of someone who is just discovering his own strength and is a kind of coming-of-age film. “

The conclusion on “Freaks”
We at can really only agree with the “Freaks” actors. Because while big action scenes are not in the foreground in the film (of course also due to budgetary reasons), the story from the pen of “Dark” co-author Marc O. Seng revolves around the human challenges that even supermen have to struggle with .
On top of that there is a humorous 80s soundtrack and lots of nerdy references to film and series highlights from the past decades – from “Matrix” to “Stranger Things” 123movies hd.
